Physical Education

Physical education plays a crucial role in our curriculum, and we are proud to have a specialist PE teacher dedicated to supporting all children in developing a lifelong love of movement and healthy living. Our specialist brings expertise and enthusiasm to every session, ensuring pupils learn fundamental skills while enjoying teamwork, sportsmanship, and the excitement of physical challenges. From team sports like football and netball to individual pursuits such as athletics and gymnastics, our PE program is designed to build confidence and fitness in a fun, inclusive environment.

Each class is allocated two hours per week for Physical Education; one indoor and one outdoor session. This is supplemented by a range of lunchtime and after-school sports clubs. Pupils are encouraged to work at their own level, in a safe but challenging environment. The school also has a long history of fielding school teams in various sports, such as football, netball, tag rugby, cricket and athletics.  The emphasis is on developing a team spirit and enjoyment of the game itself, although success is good too and should be celebrated!

Our PE lessons are planned to align with our core values, our whole child approach to PE and the objectives laid out in the Jersey Curriculum. PE is planned with progression at the heart to ensure our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through school.

Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the Jersey Curriculum in that we aim for all pupils:

  • To develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • To be physically active for sustained periods of time

  • To engage in competitive sports and activities

  • To lead healthy, active lives.

The PE curriculum incorporates the following:

  • Gymnastics – In gymnastics, pupils work towards creating, practising and performing fluent sequences on the floor and using the apparatus.

  • Dance – Pupils have opportunities to create and perform dances using a range of movement patterns, including those from different times, places and cultures.

  • Games – Games sessions teach the basic skills and tactics that pupils need, and they are introduced through a mix of traditional and alternative activities based around football, volleyball, basketball, netball, cricket, tennis, hockey and tag rugby.

  • Athletics – Athletics focus on the development of skills and technique needed for running, jumping and throwing events.

  • Fundamentals - Pupils will develop the fundamental skills of balancing, running, jumping, hopping and skipping. Pupils will develop their ability to change direction with balance and control. They will be given the opportunity to explore how the body moves at different speeds as well as how to accelerate and decelerate.

  • Swimming - Lessons currently take place in Key Stage 2 and include water-based survival skills. Pupils work towards being able to swim unaided and developing their stroke.

Supplementary activities – lunchtime and after-school sports clubs are available should children wish to attend, with a focus on developing skills and enjoyment of sport. To compliment the above activities and to expose the pupils to a wider range of sporting activities, the school invites coaches and development officers to lead lessons across all year groups in their area of expertise. This includes swimming, tag-rugby, cricket, dance, and tennis. In Years 5 and 6, all children are coached in bike competency and road safety. We also participate in local sports competitions, offering our children the chance to represent the school and build lasting memories.
