Special Educational Needs and Inclusion

At Bel Royal, we value diversity and are committed to providing an inclusive education for all children. This means removing barriers to learning to ensure all children can access our engaging, creative curriculum and make good progress from their starting points.

Our aim is to recognise special educational needs as soon as possible and implement the correct support quickly.

How are Special Educational Needs identified?

A pupil with SEN has learning difficulties that call for special educational provision, namely provision different from or in addition to adaptable classroom teaching.

At Bel Royal, we identify special educational needs through a collaborative process. This involves gathering information from previous settings, engaging in discussions with parents/carers and the pupil, consulting with other agencies, the class teacher, conducting assessments, and considering insights from previous teachers.

Teachers work with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to assess whether the child/young person has SEN and which category of need it can be identified as: communication and interaction, cognition and learning, social, emotional, and mental health difficulties, or sensory and/or physical needs. The purpose of identification is to aid us in planning how to best meet a child’s needs and, if necessary, which agency to consult for support.

How do we support pupils with Special Educational Needs?

Bel Royal School provides a broad and balanced curriculum for all pupils. Within the classroom, class teachers set suitable learning challenges and respond to a pupil’s diverse learning needs through adaptable teaching methods and accommodations to the environment.

Some pupils require additional support to achieve their full potential. As a school, we will work with parents and professionals to identify what help is needed. Additional support may include time in our Additional Resource Provision, targeted intervention, extracurricular activities, time with our ELSA, sensory integration, support from other services or time learning alongside a keyworker.
