We aim to provide all children with mathematical opportunities to develop and improve their number sense, by subitising, counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. Children begin to use mathematical vocabulary in the world around them. At Bel Royal School we use Karen Wildings ‘Essential Number Sense’ to support our teaching of subitising with natural and real life objects.
By the end of the EYFS, children should:
Will have deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number: - Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5.
Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts.
Verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system.
Compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as other quantities.
Explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including odd, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally.
